Ruth M. Carter, age 86, 213 W. Fourth St., Bloomsburg, was pronounced dead in the emergency room of the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville on Tuesday at 6:58 p. m. as a result of injuries she suffered in an automobile accident in Turbot Township, Northumberland County.

Born in Bloomsburg, she was a daughter of the late Harman and Inez (Longenberger) Morrison.

Ruth spent her entire life in Bloomsburg and was a 1940 graduate of Bloomsburg High School.

She was employed by the former Bell Telephone Co. for 31 years retiring in 1986.

Ruth was a member of the Bloomsburg Christian Church, where she was active in the meals on wheels program. A longtime member of the Bloomsburg Business & Professional Women's Club who honored her as woman of the year.

She also belonged to the Bell Telephone Pioneers; Ft. McClure Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; Columbia County Historical & Genealogical Society; American Legion Auxiliary; Women's Civic Club; Hats In Bloom chapter of the Red Hat Society; United Way of Columbia County; volunteer at Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble; and the Columbia-Montour Home Health organization.

Ruth was an active member of the Columbia County Unit of the American Cancer Society and served as chairman of the annual daffodil sales for several years. They honored her with the Ray J. Calabrese award.

She also was a longtime member of the Bloomsburg Hospital Auxiliary and participated in the semi annual Bloomin Follies programs for many years.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, William Joseph Carter, II on August 21, 1969 and four sisters: Pauline M. Margita, Geraldine Tonge, Winifred Stout and Rose Cotner; and a brother, Harman Morrison, II.

Surviving are four children: William Joseph Carter, III, Washington, DC; Candyce Lupini, Berwick; Vincent Scott Carter, and his wife Terri, Littleton, Colo.; David Brian Carter, and his wife Sarah, San Francisco, Calif.; five grandchildren: Brian Patrick Danilowicz, Franklin Robert Nafus, II, Amber Ruth Nafus, Allison Rose Carter, Andrea Bridget Carter; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:30 a. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with her pastor, Eric J. Miller officiating. Interment in New Rosemont Cemetery, Espy. Friends may call on Sunday from 6-8 p. m..
