Born in Sunbury on March 3, 1945, she was a daughter of the late Clement and Rachel (Reeder) Oberdorf. She spent her early life in Klines Grove, Northumberland County, moving to the Bloomsburg area in 1960. Growing up on a farm she remembered driving a tractor and throwing bales of hay and straw on a wagon.
Ruth was a 1963 graduate of Bloomsburg High School and a 1967 graduate of the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College where she received a degree in Elementary Education.
She taught in the Bloomsburg School system for 30 years, first at Memorial Elementary School where she taught first grade and later at the W. W. Evans School where she taught first grade and kindergarten until retiring. She was a dedicated teacher, spending many out of school hours preparing lessons.
Ruth will be remembered by her former students for having rabbits in her classroom. This was featured in a Press Enterprise article. She enjoyed bird watching and gardening and planting flowers at her home. Visiting friends was important to her and she enjoyed meeting them at Cracker Barrel for lunch.
Her grandchildren were very important to her and she enjoyed attending their sports and school activities. Her grandchildren’s friends knew her as Grandma Ruth. She always put other peoples needs before her own.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Lunger, on January 4, 2013 and a sister Susan Oberdorf.
Ruth is survived by her son, Mason W. Lunger and his wife Michelle of Bloomsburg; two grandsons: Jackson W. Lunger and Clayton C. Lunger; two step grandsons: Collin Benintende of Harrisburg and Logan Benintende and his partner Coralis N. Guzman who resided with her; a sister, Janice Runyan of Jensen Beach, Florida and a number of nieces and nephews that she greatly enjoyed.
