Shawn T. Nevel, age 52 of Third Street, Mifflinville, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, January 1, 2024 while under the care of Compassus Hospice and with his family at his side.
Born in Berwick on September 6, 1971, he was the son of Franklin Nevel of Orangeville and Susan (Hauck) Nevel of Berwick. His step-mother is Sherry Nevel of Orangeville. He was a 1989 graduate of Central Columbia High School and a lifelong resident of Columbia County.
Shawn was a dedicated employee of the Benton Foundry, Inc., for 25 years, during which time he held a number of positions including supervisor. He was also employed parttime at Curt’s Gun Shop in Mifflinville.
He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He also was an avid collector of vinyl records and a music enthusiast.
Shawn proudly served his country by serving with the U. S. Navy during Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He was a member of the NMCB FORTY (Naval Mobil Construction Battalion Forty) also known as the Seabees serving for five years.
His honors and medals included the First Good Conduct Award; Marksman, M-16 Rifle; Joint Meritorius Unit Award; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, 4th Award; National Defense Service Medal; Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon; Southwest Asia Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and Fleet Marine Service Combat Operations Insignia; Kuwait Liberation Medal; and the Humanitarian Service Medal.
Shawn received the Quilt of Valor in 2019. He was a collector of World War II memorabilia and enjoyed attending military shows. He is a member and former Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 821, Berwick and also served in the Post honor guard.
In addition to his parents and step mother, he is survived by his wife, the former Crystal L. Hock; two daughters, Olivia Dawson of San Marcos, Texas and Grace wife of Kyle Furuglyas of Norfolk, Virginia; a grandson, Lincoln Furuglyas of Norfolk, Virginia; a brother, Brian Nevel and his wife Danielle of Hetlerville; a nephew Carter Nevel of Hetlerville; and two uncles, Robert Hauck of Allentown and Mark Hauck and his wife Susan of Mifflinville.
A Celebration of Life Service with Military Honors will be held at the convenience of the family at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 821 in Berwick.
In lieu of flowers, Shawn’s request was that donations be sent to VFW Post 821, 1408 W. Front St., Berwick, PA 18603 to help fellow veteran’s and veteran’s programs.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market Street, Bloomsburg.
