Col. STEPHEN L. HEBBARD, USAF, Ret.
Col. Stephen L. Hebbard, USAF, ret., age 69, 437 E. Hillcrest Dr., Bloomsburg, was found dead at his home on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012 of natural causes.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on Oct. 24, 1942, he was a son of the late Joseph and Myrtle (Locke) Hebbard. He resided in Main Township since 1971.
Steve was a graduate of Erasmus Hall, Brooklyn, in 1959; Brooklyn College in 1963 and received an MBA degree from Bloomsburg University in 1991.
He received his commission as an officer in the US Air Force in 1963 and remained on active duty until 1971. He served in Vietnam as an F-4C pilot, stationed at Da Nang Air Base, flying 100 missions over North Vietnam. Following his active duty stint, he was a member of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard from 1972 until retiring in 1994.
Steve was the Commander of the 111th Air Support Operations Center, Willow Grove Naval Air Station and Chief of Productivity and Quality, Headquarters of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard, Fort Indiantown Gap.
In 1978 he piurchased the Zimmer Insurance Agency, Inc., Bloomsburg, operating it until 1998 when he sold it. He currently was a member of the Adjunct Faculty at Bloomsburg University.
Steve was a faithful member of the Shiloh Bible Church, Almedia, where he served as choir director for 25 years and as chairman of the Board of Elders for ten years.
He was a devout christian and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Nancy E. Layos, on Oct. 4, 2010 and by a brotherJohn E. Hebbard in Oct., 2010
Surviving are his daughter, Laurel K. Kane, Spencerport, N.Y., a son, Matthew S. Hebbard, and his wife Marcela, McAllen, Texas; three granddaughters: Emma Louise Kane, Rebecca Ruth Kane, Ana Elizabeth Hebbard and two brothers: Douglas J. Hebbard, and his wife Sandra, Tarpon Springs, Fla. and Leigh G. Hebbard, and his wife Patricia, Austin, Texas.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 11 a. m. in Shiloh Bible Church, 123 Church St., Bloomsburg (Almedia) with his pastor, Rev. Dr. Douglas H. Lyon officiating.
Interment will be made at the convenience of the family next to his beloved wife in Emanuel Reformed Cemetery, Main Township. Military honors will be accorded by a US Air Force detail from Fort Maguire Air Base, New Jersey.
