Susan Maybelle Lunger

Susan Maybelle (Swarts) Lunger, age 78, died peacefully at her home in Bloomsburg, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, April 22, 2021, due to complications following cardiac surgery. Friends and family were shocked by the sudden loss of the confidant, voice of reason, and true friend many had in Susie.

Born in Bloomsburg on August 11, 1942, Susan was the second child of Ralph and Alice (Adler) Swarts. She was raised in Bloomsburg and graduated from Bloomsburg High School in 1960. She attended Bloomsburg State College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business in 1965.

Susie found success working for IBM in Owego, New York and soon after by a secretarial position at Kawneer Cop., Bloomsburg. She married the love of her life, Richard L. (Dick) Lunger in 1966 and soon after landed a teaching position at Lewisburg High School. She was beloved by her shorthand and typing students.  She taught for 15 years and enjoyed coaching tennis during her tenure there.

After teaching, Susie found some success in real estate, but soon found not only employment but a second family at The Inn At Turkey Hill as their finance and accounting consultant.

Susie volunteered for many years and much of her time as a member of the Southern Columbia School Board where her financial expertise proved invaluable.  She also gave of her time and financial expertise as a trustee and member of the finance committee at Wesley United Methodist Church. Susie participated in several mission trips where she could be found getting her hands dirty with hammer and nail helping to build housing for the less fortunate.

After finding a beautiful piece of land and building an adorable house with their bare hands, Susie and Dick settled in Catawissa where they grew Christmas trees and blueberries, and raised goats. They enjoyed a simple happy life together until Dick was diagnosed with Leukemia. Sue was the consummate caregiver to Dick through his long illness. Following his passing, Sue became the caregiver for her mother, Alice, through her battle with dementia.

Susie was a heck of a tennis player, avid golf player, and verified card shark. She was blessed with wonderfully dedicated groups of friends who planned regular brunches, card games, trips abroad, and movie nights. Friends and family will miss Susie’s sharp wit and sense of humor, but most of all her uncanny ability to cut to the heart of any matter to give calming advice.

Susie was preceded in death by her loving husband Richard Lunger, her parents Alice Steckbeck, Warren Steckbeck and Ralph Swarts and her brother Nelson Swarts.

She is survived by nieces Kristin Swarts Loftus, her husband Christopher and children Parker and Abby; Karlyn Swarts Scatigno, her husband Kevin and children Kevin, Jr, Kayleigh, and Konner; and Kerrie Swarts Jenkins, and her children Adler, Thomas and Brooks;  also by sisters-in-law Paige Swarts, Joyce Bond, Georgia Crossley, Marilyn Lunger, and Ruth Lunger; and god daughters Olivia and Lauren Pruden.
