Susan Lee (York) Messersmith, age 82, of Mt. Zion Drive, Danville died early Sunday June 25, 2023 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville where she was a patient.
Sue was born in Los Angeles, California. Sue moved to Redlands-Yucaipa, California area from Los Angeles in 1954. She graduated from Redlands High School in 1958. She went on to get her ART in Medical Record Administration in 1980. She continued to further her education in the field of Medical Records until her retirement in 1994.
Susan and Don got married in 1959 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on August 22, 2023.
Sue was employed by the University of Redlands for 3 years and worked in Public Relations. She had a licensed Day Care in her home for several years in Redlands. Sue worked at Redlands Community Hospital 13 years as an Assistant Director of Medical Records; 2 years at Loma Linda Community Hospital as a Quality Assurance Assistant Director and her last employment prior to retirement was as a Medical Staff/Medical Records Director for the Inland Surgery Center in Redlands, California.
Sue was involved in her earlier years with Girl and Boy Scouts, Parent Teacher Association and as a Board Member of the Redlands Swim Team. Don and Sue spent 20 years going to swim meets with their 3 sons. Daughter Cathi was a trooper tagging along since she didn’t do competitive swimming. After moving to Danville, Sue was employed at the Danville Area Red Cross at 3 different times once as Blood Mobile Coordinator and then in the office. She also volunteered at the House of Care at Geisinger Hospital. She was a Board member with the Montour County Genealogical Society holding all elective positions at one time or another. She was also a member of Ft. McClure Chapter (Bloomsburg) Daughters of the American Revolution serving as Secretary for 3 years. She was a life member of the Friends of the Thomas Beaver Free Library. She was one of the founding members of the Bookworms Reading Group at the Library.
Sue and her husband Don travelled extensively throughout the United States having visited all 50 states plus Canada and Mexico. They would winter in California and Washington State to be near their children and family. Her hobbies were reading (over 1300 books on her kindle alone!) She read everyday and was especially fond of spy novels and never went anywhere without a book or her kindle…And using her IPAD to keep track of everybody and doing Words with Friends and playing games and staying informed. She also enjoyed crocheting and needlepoint and watching all the nature shows on TV…. she loved animals… She was never ever bored – there was always something to peak her interest.
Her husband and children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life, she will miss them terribly. Surviving is her husband Don and their children; Cathleen Bell, Mark Messersmith, Michael Messersmith, Tim Messersmith and his wife Alina; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial to follow in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville.
