Susie "Sue" (Simcox) Dunn

Susie M. “Sue” (Simcox) Dunn, 93, of Bloomsburg, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 28, 2022 after a valiant fight with kidney and heart disease.  Born in Lock Haven on November 15, 1928, she was the youngest daughter of Charles and Evelyn (Myers) Simcox.

Sue graduated from Lock Haven High School, Class of ’45 and continued her studies at Lock Haven State College until she met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Dunn.  They were married on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1947, and celebrated 62 years of marriage.  Bob preceded her in death on November 13, 2009.

Sue was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church for over 60 years.  She was the brownie and girl scout leader of her daughters’ troops.  For many years, she served as the wedding hostess where she helped brides plan their special day. With Bob, they delivered Meals on Wheels to shut-ins.  She was a member of the Crusaders Sunday school class, a member of 50 Year Club, and served on the Board of Trustees for several terms.

During her working career, she was employed as office staff at Bloomsburg Mills, with Clair Hock Construction and Everett Construction.  Sue had a keen sense for numbers and decided to take courses with H&R Block where she could prepare returns during tax season. She worked for H&R Block, first in Bloomsburg, then in Crossville, TN, before the culmination of her career as an executive tax preparer and supervisor of the center city Philadelphia office.  She retained a limited number of clients, preparing tax returns well into her 80’s.  When Sue and Bob returned to Bloomsburg for their retirement years, Sue took on a new passion – home renovations.  She was far ahead of the DIY trend when she renovated nearly condemned properties for use as rental property.  Sue and Bob began to acquire properties around Bloomsburg, including a number of college rental properties that they managed.

Sue was an excellent seamstress, making clothes for her daughters in their early years, as well as tailored style clothing which, in fact, led her to win the PA state “Sewing with Wool” contest sponsored by the Singer Sewing Corporation.  She was an avid gardener and in her earlier years was a beautiful soprano singer.

Sue was a caring and helpful neighbor wherever they lived.  She still maintained friendships with neighbors to her death.  She was known for her afternoon ‘happy hour’ where she would visit with her friends sharing her favorite libration, a Manhattan with a maraschino cherry!

Sue was immensely proud of her daughters, Donna Kerstetter, Monteagle, TN and Debora Clark, Fort Worth, TX.  She was a strong influence in their lives and both are highly successful thanks, in part, to her leadership.  She leaves a legacy of four grandchildren - Wendy (Rob) Czymoch, Jonathan (Karen) Kerstetter, Meredith Clark and Philip (Ashley) Clark as well as four great-grandchildren, Christopher (Erin) Chafatelli, Prudence and Adeline Clark and Robert Kerstetter.

It is with immense gratitude that we thank those who helped with Sue’s care in her last years.  Heather Berkey, Robin Bennett, Florence Brady, Jennifer Heckman, Olivia Garringer, Eileen Harmon, and Crystal Slater
