Vernon A. Brose, age 80, 6 Spruce St., Shamokin Dam, died at 10:05 a. m. Monday, July 13, 2009 at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he was a patient for five weeks. He had been in failing health for three years.
Born on June 24, 1929 in Arlington, South Dakota, he was a son of the late Arthur F. and Alma (Weiss) Brose. He resided in Shamokin Dam since 1967.
He was a 1947 graduate of Arlington High School, Arlington, South Dakota. He earned a Batchelor's Degree in Agronomy from South Dakota University in 1958 and a Masters Degree in Agricultural Management from the University of Delaware in 1963.
Early in his career he worked as an agricultural extension educator at the University of Missouri, the University of South Dakota and the University of Illinois. He joined Penn State University in 1967 as an agricultural extension co-ordinator covering Snyder, Union and Montour Counties and some additional areas later on. He retired in 1990. He also taught young people tractor safety for many years.
Vernon was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury.
He was interested in antique cars, belonging to the Antique Auto Club of American and served as a volunteer guide at their museum in Hershey and also donated a car to the museum. In addition he belonged to a number of antique tractor clubs in the Central Pennsylvania area.
An avid woodworker, he enjoyed making toys which he would donate to various charitable organizations throughtout the area. He also will be remembered for the beautiful lawn which he maintained at his home.
Vernon served with the US Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953.
Surviving are his wife, the former Marilyn Dahl, with whom he celebrated his 52nd wedding anniversary on December 23, 2008; a daughter, Nanette, wife of Alan Clements, Bear Del; two grandddaughters: Samantha Clements and Jillian Clements, Bear, Del. and four sisters: Mavis Overgaard, Centerville, S. Dakota; Irene Lund, Arlington, S. Dakota; Leona Johnson, Sioux Falls, S. Dakota; and Dorothee, wife of Verle Pike, Lake Preston, S. Dakota.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 11 a. m. in Zion Lutheran Church, 15 South Fifth St., Sunbury, with his pastor, Rev. Richard Fangmann officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam.
