Warren E. “Barney” Bloom, Jr., age 93, 2580 Tower Road, Bloomsburg, died at 4:40 a. m. Thursday, May 18, 2017 at The Gardens At Orangeville where he resided since August, 2016.
Born in Berwick on June 27, 1923, he was a son of the late Warren E., Sr. and Mary E. (Kershner) Bloom. He resided in the Bloomsburg area since 1946.
Barney was co-owner of the former Bloom Brothers Floor Covering on Main Street, Bloomsburg, retiring in 1988. Earlier he was employed at the same location by the former Girton Floor Covering and prior to that at the former American Car & Foundry, Co. plant in Berwick.
He was a long time member of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church; Bloomsburg Elks Lodge 436; Columbia Valley Moose Lodge 623; a life member of the Berwick VFW Post; and the West End Hose Co., Berwick.
Barney was an avid bowler in his earlier years and later took up golf, playing until he was in his late 80’s.
He served with the U. S. Navy during World War II.
Barney was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, the former Phyllis R. Zettles, on January 7, 2014; by five brothers: Roland Bloom; Parvin Bloom; Ivan Bloom; Willard Bloom; Franklin Bloom; and by three sisters: Geraldine Andres; Uthena Shaffer and June DiPaolo.
Surviving are his daughter, Darla A., wife of Gordon R. Acornley, Bloomsburg; a son, Robert W. Bloom, who resided with him; a grandson, Gordon R. Acornley, Jr., and his wife Amy, Benton; a granddaughter, Gretchen, wife of Matthew Mills, Bloomsburg; five great grandchildren; three brothers: Paul Bloom, Bloomsburg, Vernon Bloom and his wife Ruth, Berwick; Carl, and his wife Charlotte, Berwick and a number of nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 6 p. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with family friend, retired Baptist minister, Rev. Gary W. Reichenbach officiating. Viewing from 4-6 p. m.
