William D. Ashelman
William D. Ashelman, age 93, formerly of Northumberland, died at 7:03 a. m. Saturday, June 13, 2015 at the Millville Health & Rehabilitation Center, Millville, where he resided since Oct., 2009.
He was born on April 17, 1922 in Benton Township, a son of the late Ward C. and Grace (Eveland) Ashelman.
Bill was a 1940 graduate of Benton High School. He served with the US Navy during World War II.
Following his military service, he attended American University in Washington, D.C. for two years.
He resided in Northumberland from 1952 to 1986. In 1988 he moved to North Carolina, residing there until 2008 when he moved to New Mexico, briefly, before returning to Pennsylvania.
He was employed as a bus driver by Edwards Lake To Sea/Trailways Bus Co., Williamsport for 30 years, retiring in 1984. In 1957 he purchased a home in Northumberland and converted into a restaurant, the Gay 90's Inn, operating it until 1961, along with his mother.
Bill travel extensively, enjoyed fine dining at gourmet restaurants and collecting antiques.
In 1986 he published a book, "A Tale of Trails", detailing his experiences as a bus driver.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Northumberland, while he resided there.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carrol Ashelman and a sister, Lois (Ashelman) Mark.
Surviving are two nieces: Shelly Paul, Northumberland and Dianne Stewart, Sterling, Colo. and two nephews: Howard G. Paul, Jr., and his wife Marilyn, Northumberland and John Ashelman, and his wife Irene, Milford, Conn.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a. m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Benton, with the Rev. Richard L. Kellett, retired pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Northumberland, officiating. Interment in Hamline Cemetery, Benton Township. Friends may call from 10-11 a. m.
