William D. âBillâ Corey, age 89, 16 Cherry St., Danville, died at 1:25 p. m. Sunday, November 1, 2015 at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he was a patient for six days. He was in failing health since May.
Born in Bloomsburg on November 26, 1925, he was a son of the late William S. and Ebba Corey. His early life was spent in Mt. Jewett, McKean County where he was a 1943 graduate of Mt. Jewett High School.
Bill served with the US Navy during World War II. Following his military service, he moved to Danville where was employed by his father who owned Coreyâs Corner Market on Mill Street. Eventually he assumed ownership and operated the market until 1975. Following that he was employed by Hawkins Chevrolet, Danville, as a salesman for a number of years. Following his retirement from Hawkins, he worked there part-time, along with his son-in-law, James Musselman, picking up cars. They became known to the other employees as âBatman and Robinâ.
He was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Danville, and the Danville Moose Lodge.
Bill played basketball at the old YMCA, as a member of the Watts Hotel Team and will be remembered as a left hand shooter. He also coached the 9 and 10 year girls Little League Team and they were the Pennsylvania Section 3 Champions in 1994.
Bill was an avid bowler earlier in life and also enjoyed playing golf. He especially enjoyed going to Pocono Downs and making his weekly lottery ticket purchases with his friend Art Fryling.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary G. Montague, with whom he celebrated 65 years of marriage on May 7, 2015; a daughter, Suzanne, wife of James Musselman, Danville; a son, Robert William âBobbyâ Corey, at home; a grandson, Richard B. Campbell, Columbus, Ohio; a granddaughter, Stephanie, wife of Zadoc Brown, Maui, Hawaii; three great-grandchildren: Kristin Campbell, Zadoc W. Brown (who shared a birth date with his great-grandfather), and Declan Brown. He was the last of his immediate family having been preceded in death by a brother, Robert Corey.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 11 a. m. in Trinity United Methodist Church 306 Lombard Avenue, Danville, with his pastor, Rev. Ronald S. French officiating. Private interment will be made in the Church memorial garden. The family will receive friends at the Church from 10-11 a. m.
