William C. Harrell, age 87, 2281 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg (Espy) died at 10:50 a. m. Saturday, March 10, 2018, at the Watsontown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Watsontown where he was a patient for one month.
Born at the Bloomsburg Hospital on June 24, 1930, he was a son of the late Ernest and Frances (Furman) Harrell. He returned to Bloomsburg in 1990 after residing in Shippensburg for 26 years.
Bill was a 1948 graduate of Bloomsburg High School and received his B.S. degree from the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1957. He earned his M.E.D. from Syracuse University in 1964.
He began his teaching career at Hummelstown Junior-Senior School in Hummelstown where he taught from 1958 - 1960. He then served as junior high guidance counselor in the Shippensburg School System from 1964 -1966 and Director of Guidance for the Shippensburg School System from 1966 - 1970. He then became Associate Dean of Admissions at Shippensburg University, serving until 1985. Bill next served as project director for the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universities as director of the "Project For Informed Choices", retiring in 1994.
Bill was an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church, Espy, where served as a member and also president of the church council. He also represented St. John on the prison ministry committee of the Bloomsburg Ministerium. He also was a member of the Espy Fire Company.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting, walking, camping and collecting antiques.
While living in Shippensburg he was a member of the Memorial Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday School for 25 years; served as president of the United Way; and was involved with the Big Brothers - Big Sisters program at Shippensburg University.
Bill proudly served his country as a member of the U. S. Navy from 1950 to 1954, during the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mollie Hippensteel, with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage on June 15, 2017; a daughter, Heidi Harrell-Misselhorn, at home; a son, Timothy Harrell, and his wife Hope, Nazareth; and a granddaughter, Karlie Harrell, Nazareth.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at 11 a. m. in St. John Lutheran Church, 2575 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg (Espy) with his pastor, Rev. Gordon E. Smith, officiating. Interment will follow in Creveling Cemetery, Almedia with military honors by the combined veterans group.. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a. m.
